Michael Heaviside VC Centenary Project

This is a project based in County Durham serving people in Tyneside and Teesside. The project will develop their website to host information on training activities and opportunities, and up to date research on recovery, research and good practice. The project will deliver new engagement training events, help connect and strengthen recovery communities, and empower people in recovery to advocate their own recovery, and help to remove negative stigma associated with addiction.

The project will celebrate their 30th anniversary and provide activities throughout the year for their members, including camping activities at Northern Camp 2017, a Christmas pantomime and adventure weekend residential. This will enable the group to continue to run weekly activities for disadvantaged young people from the community.

Creative people and places

The school will install climbing and balance beams with all weather surfacing in their grounds. This will provide a safe outdoor environment and activities for children.

The project will refurbish the men?s toilets at their indoor bowls club. This will improve the health and safety standards, and enable existing and new members to enjoy the social and recreation benefits of bowls.

This project will develop the outdoor play area of their school grounds, including installing two play towers with climbing nets and bridges, den building equipment and balls skill panel. This will provide physical, challenging and imaginative activities encouraging the pupils? and children in the wider community to become more active.

People who are the hardest to reach will benefit from this project, such as those with multiple and complex needs, unemployed, over 50-year-olds, carers and ex-offenders. They will be provided with training, guidance and support and given opportunities as volunteers, peer mentors and apprentices.

The organisation will use the funding to deliver a programme of craft based workshops and activities for disadvantaged and vulnerable women. This will provide a support network for the women, and help them develop social enterprise skills and confidence, and improve their opportunities, aspirations and wellbeing.

The school will use the funding to hold a series of intergenerational community activities culminating in a parade of a colliery banner from the community centre to the school. This will bring people together to celebrate the rich history of mining and pit village culture, learn more about local people and create a sense of pride and achievement.

The organisation will use the funding to run a pilot project using the natural and countryside environment, to develop the skills and confidence of people with mental health issues. This will involve practical and classroom based sessions including landscaping, conservation and stone walling to help improve beneficiaries? wellbeing and training and employment opportunities.

This grant will be used to develop plans for a project that target people who are hardest to reach, people with multiple, complex barriers, over 50s, carers and ex-offenders and will provide training, guidance and support, and opportunities as volunteers, peer mentors and apprentices. The development funding will be used for research and evidence gathering, partnership meetings and workshops, marketing and communications work, partnership development and the development of monitoring and evaluation toolkit.
